AMERICA READS & COUNTS
The America Reads Challenge was initiated by the Clinton Administration in 1996 to provide children with tutors through a work-study program fully funded by the Department of Education. A year later, President Clinton worked with the Department of Education and the National Science Foundation to create America Counts. Since 1997, both initiatives have combined and have been implemented across the country, creating and funding programs that provide children with a place to learn outside of regular classrooms.
UNIVERSITY HONORS
The University Honors Program at UMD is dedicated to providing high-achieving, motivated students advanced learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. Consistent with the University’s overall mission, University Honors offers an enhanced liberal education experience. The program is designed to create a strong community of peers eager to challenge themselves and to encourage meaningful scholarship, service, leadership, and cultural experiences.
UHSA is proud to begin its eighth year in partnership with CHUM working with the Steve O'Neil Apartments. Weekly, UHSA students provide mentoring, tutoring, and instructional services to children living in the apartments. Also, they host a course taught jointly to students and apartment residents as well as several events including a UMD campus visit.
